SciFest Dubai has teamed up with Loom Ensemble, an interdisciplinary performance collective from New York, to bring you What the Jellyfish Knows - a one-of-a-kind, STEAM experience, weaving together science, music, dance-theatre, and audience participation to inspire a fresh wave of enthusiasm, learning and activism for ocean ecology.
In the timeframe of a single class period, What the Jellyfish Knows uses the creatures and songs from David Attenborough’s BBC Deep Sea episode of Planet Earth as a launchpad to dive into group discussions of ocean ecology. With the scientific content of a nature documentary,
What the Jellyfish Knows invokes the awe-inspiring beauty of our planet’s waters through virtuosic musical complexity, a healthy dose of joyful laughter, and an urgent call to care for our oceans’ ecosystems,
This inter-disciplinary STEAM experience is choreographed and performed by Raphael Sacks, an international performance artist and eco-activist who uses dance-theatre to create social change. Raphael has performed internationally from Dubai to London, from Rome to Stockholm, and across the USA from San Francisco to NYC -- most recently appearing at Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic.
What The Jellyfish Knows is the result of two years of rehearsal development, premiered last year in Al Serkal, and has since toured up and down the American Northeast. It is suitable for 13+-year-olds. It is a 30-minute minimalist inter-disciplinary STEAM experience that we bring to schools and that you can block book for an entire year group or key stage. It is followed by a 10-minute Q & A with the artist.
This inter-disciplinary STEAM experience is supplemented with a teaching and learning resource pack, which we share at the time the booking is made. We look forward to bringing What the Jellyfish Knows to schools in Dubai this March and April, and are happy to answer any questions you may have and to coordinate with you.
